Leaf Rubbings

23 Sep

To kick off fall we collected leaves in kindergarten.  We read a book called Autumn, looked at the leaves with magnifying glasses, drew pictures of the leaves in our science journals, and had a pretty good discussion about chlorophyl.  Then I showed the kids how to do leaf rubbings.  We followed this great idea I found on Filfth Wizardry and it was totally awesome.  The kids LOVED it!  Tomorrow we will add food coloring to complete the mural.  I can’t wait to share this on our outside bulletin board.  Using many colors on one leaf was key.  The kids couldn’t get over how real the rubbings looked.  They kept saying “It looks like the book!”

My co-teacher Brigitte Benchanan took these great photos.  You can see part two of our Leaf Rubbing Mural here.

Even as many times as I’ve done this, it still gives a bit of a thrill. So in the hands of little ones.. ahh.. so great! :)
